Louisiana Earns Historic Win Over No. 15 Texas State, 3-2

Ragin' Cajuns defeat former SBC rival to secure program's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent
LAFAYETTE – History was made Thursday night at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.
Carson Glenn scored twice, Miku Kurihara added a goal and assist, and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Soccer team earned the biggest victory in program history, knocking off No. 15 Texas State, 3-2, to claim the Ragin' Cajuns' first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent.
Louisiana (5-2-1) entered the match 0-8-0 against nationally-ranked opponents in its 26-year history and rebounded from a pair of close losses to SEC foes to hand former Sun Belt Conference rival and current Pac-12 member Texas State (6-1-1) its first loss of the year.
"That's why we schedule the games we do – to play the best teams and get ourselves ready for conference play," head coach Chris McBride said. "Tonight was another test to see if we could make the changes and adaptations we needed to make from the Ole Miss and Mississippi State games, where we didn't come out on top. We knew we were creating chances, and we just needed to be more clinical and capitalize against a top team."
Kurihara put the Ragin' Cajuns in front in the 16th minute, scoring her team-leading seventh goal of the season on an unassisted strike from 18 yards.
Texas State answered just 63 seconds later when Marivic Lek-Miro scored from 10 yards off an assist from Helen Alormenu to even the match at 1-1.
The tie would not last long.
Glenn put Louisiana back in front in the 27th minute, taking a right-footed blast from just inside the 18-yard box and beating Texas State goalkeeper Caitlyn Draper to give the Ragin' Cajuns a 2-1 advantage.
The Ragin' Cajuns then delivered another blow early in the second half.
Kurihara found Glenn with a through ball in the 51st minute, sending Glenn in alone against Draper. Glenn beat the Texas State goalkeeper one-on-one to score her second goal of the night and give Louisiana a 3-1 lead.
"Miko and Carson were phenomenal tonight," McBride said. "We all know what Carson can do, but to see her put it out there tonight and come through with a tough goal in the first half to put us ahead, and then get that second goal for some insurance, was huge. Miko's performance was outstanding as well, and that through ball she played to Carson on the second goal was a big-time play."
Texas State answered in the 66th minute when Jenny Ngankem headed home a corner kick from Matsuri Tsutsui, cutting the Louisiana lead to 3-2.
The Bobcats, who vaulted into the national rankings after earning wins over P4 programs Texas A&M and Baylor, continued to apply pressure throughout the final 25 minutes, but the Ragin' Cajuns were able to disrupt possessions and get clear outs on balls sent into the box.
"They're (Texas State) so dangerous in the box, and they have so many threats," said McBride. "The deliveries they get from their players are phenomenal. They have speed and spin on their service, and they're able to capitalize in the air with some real threats. That's tough to defend, and it's something we'll definitely look at moving forward to see how we can improve. But that's probably one of the best we'll see. It gives us a great learning experience, and again, that's why we schedule these games. They make us better, one game at a time."
Goalkeeper Natalie Mayes came up with four saves on the night for Louisiana, including several crucial stops during Texas State's second-half push.
Texas State finished with eight corner kicks to Louisiana's four and outshot the Ragin' Cajuns 8-6 in the second half. Louisiana finished with a 13-12 overall edge in shots, while both teams recorded six shots on goal.
Louisiana will close out its non-conference schedule on Tuesday when it travels to Baton Rouge to face Southern University in a 7 p.m., contest at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
