Ragin' Cajuns to face top-seeded South Alabama on Monday in SBC Championships
LAFAYETTE – A late goal in the 78th minute broke a tie as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to in-state opponent ULM on Wednesday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex in the regular-season finale.
Â
Louisiana (7-6-4, 4-3-3 SBC), which secured the No. 8 seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Championships in Foley, Ala., held a 13-5 advantage in total shots and controlled 57 percent of the possessions, but ULM (11-2-4, 6-0-4 SBC) capitalized on its opportunities to claim its first-ever SBC regular-season title.
Â
After the Warhawks took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute on Skylar Blaise's 12th goal of the season, the Ragin' Cajuns drew even early in the second half when freshman Miku Kurihara buried a penalty kick in the 57th minute for her seventh goal of the year.
Â
ULM, which lost a tie-breaker to South Alabama and will be the No. 3 seed, reclaimed the lead in the 78th minute when Ava Goodman came off the bench and scored an unassisted goal for the eventual game-winner.
Â
Louisiana created several chances throughout the match, including four shots on goal and an 8-2 edge in first-half attempts. Freshmen Carson Glenn, Sisley Stephens, and Kurihara each tallied multiple shots, while goalkeeper Natalie Mayes made one save in 90 minutes of action.
Â
ULM's Jen Handy stopped three shots to earn the win, improving to 9-2-4 on the season.
Â
Louisiana will open play in the SBC Championships on Monday at 4:30 p.m. against top-seeded South Alabama in a quarterfinal matchup. The match will be available on ESPN+.
