Louisiana takes top-seeded Jaguars to brink despite playing player down for final 50 minutes
FOLEY, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns saw their Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Championship run come to a heartbreaking end on Monday, falling to top-seeded South Alabama in a penalty shootout, 4-3, after the teams played to a scoreless draw through 110 minutes at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
Â
Louisiana (7-6-5), the No. 8 seed in the field, battled toe-to-toe with the Jaguars (10-3-4), matching them in nearly every statistical category. Louisiana held a 17-16 advantage in shots, with each side putting eight on frame.
Â
Goalkeeper Natalie Mayes stopped three shots for Louisiana before being sent off in the 60th minute for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Defender Aila Swinton moved into goal for the final 50 minutes and the overtime periods, recording five saves to keep Louisiana level.
Â
Offensively, Carson Glenn led the Ragin' Cajuns with a match-high eight shots, with three shots on target, while Sisley Stephens and Salma Elhaimer each added two shots on goal.
Â
In the penalty shootout, Miku Kurihara, Addison Soehn, and Swinton converted their attempts as Louisiana built a 3-1 lead, but South Alabama rallied with three straight conversions to prevail 4-3 after six rounds.
