Ragin' Cajuns hand ODU first loss since August 31; will travel to face Troy on Friday
LAFAYETTE – Redshirt freshman Carson Glenn extended her scoring streak to four matches, converting her lone shot attempt for a go-ahead goal in the 64th minute to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Soccer team to a 2-1 win over Old Dominion in a Sun Belt Conference match on Friday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.
Miku Kurihara added her third goal of the season and Natalie Mayes stopped four shots, including a diving stop midway through the 78th minute to help Louisiana (6-5-4, 3-2-3 SBC) hand ODU (8-2-4, 4-1-3 SBC) its first loss since a 1-0 decision against Liberty on August 31.
"I'm really proud of the group tonight, they put in a heck of an effort," Louisiana head coach Chris McBride said. "It's a lot different than we've been playing this year, but Old Dominion's the best team that we've played this year, and we had to make sure that defensively we were on point for a lot of the game."
Despite being outshot in the match, 10-4, Louisiana took advantage of its opportunities beginning with Kurihara's goal – the lone shot taken by the Ragin' Cajuns in the opening 45 minutes – off an assist by Sisley Stephens in the 20th minute.
That was enough for Louisiana to claim a 1-0 lead at halftime as ODU missed on four chances at the net with Mayes stopping three attempts. The junior goalkeeper stopped ODU's best attempt in the second half when she knocked away Ashley Economopoulos' potential equalizer to the upper right corner in the 78th minute before the Louisiana defense stiffened in the final minutes to preserve its second win in three matches over the Monarchs.
"We knew it was going to be another tough one; we've had three tough games back-to-back," Mayes said after Louisiana went 0-1-1 in its previous two road matches. "Our coaching staff prepared us really well for this game, and every player on the roster came together tonight, and it was just an incredible effort.
"It's a huge win for us. We want to put ourselves in a good spot for the Sun Belt Conference tournament, and we know that if we stick to our preparations like we have for the past couple games, we'll get results, and that's ultimately what we need for the tournament."
ODU tied the match at 1-1 in the 50th minute when Koto Davis scored her second goal of the season, beginning with a first touch by Economopoulos before Hannah Morgan found Davis on a cross from inside the 18-yard box.
Louisiana would nearly break the deadlock in the 59th minute on Kiruhara's header that sailed left of the net before Glenn would take a feed from Sophia Moore and score her team-high sixth goal of the season just over five minutes later.
"I think it's just, staying confident in myself and my ability," said Glenn. "I was getting a lot of opportunities to turn, so I got the ball and I turned and I ran and I saw that one of my teammates (Sophia Moore) could play me off the ball. She got it back out to me, and then I saw an opening for the goal, and I just took it on my left foot."
Defensively, Louisiana held ODU to seven shots below its season average (17.2 shots per match) while joining Troy and Georgetown as the only schools to score multiple goals on the Monarchs this season.
"We know what we're capable of," senior defender Aila Swinton said. "I think that's the biggest takeway from all of the opportunities that we had on the road and even today. Knowing that we've always had the confidence, all the skills that we needed to win a game like today, just helps us gain even more confidence.
"We know that we have a strong defense, strong back line, even the people off the bench are impact players. But I think one of our main things was just to knock them (ODU) off the ball, kind of be a little bit more physical. ODU is a great team that passes around people, making sure we don't lose our marks and we stay organized."
Louisiana will close out its 2025 road schedule on Friday (October 24) when it travels to face Troy in an SBC West Division showdown before wrapping up the regular season at home on October 29 against ULM.
