TROY, Ala. – Behind a record-tying performance from freshman Miku Kurihara, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team delivered a record-breaking performance in an 8-0 Sun Belt Conference victory over Troy on Friday at the Troy Soccer Complex.
Kurihara recorded the sixth hat trick in school history – and the first since 2015 – while adding two assists to match the single-match school record of eight points, last achieved by both Yazmin Montoya and Annika Schmidt in 2013.
Her performance helped power a Louisiana offense that eclipsed its previous record for goals scored (6) in an SBC match that was last set in 2010, while its 21 goals scored in league play broke the previous record (19) set in 2014.
Louisiana (7-5-4, 4-2-3 SBC), which also clinched a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Championships, wasted no time setting the tone, scoring four times in the first 37 minutes. Freshman Charlotte Hinchey opened the scoring with a header past Troy goalkeeper Keely Cash in the eighth minute off an assist from Kurihara.
Kurihara would strike twice herself in a four-minute span in the first half, beginning with a solo effort in the 26th minute and a header in front of the goal off a Sydney Byrnes pass in the 30th. Tori Bockstadter capped the first-half surge with her first goal of the season – and second career goal – in the 37th minute for a 4-0 lead.
Louisiana continued the momentum into the second half, adding four more goals. Carson Glenn made it 5-0 early in the period with her team high seventh goal of the season off a setup from Raegan Latiolais.
Kurihara added her third goal of the night just minutes later joining Montoya, Schmidt and Callie Oliver as the lone players to record hat tricks in school history.
Salma Elhaimer then closed the scoring with a pair of strikes – her fifth and sixth of the season – coming in the 56th and 61st minutes, both assisted by Glenn and Kurihara.
Louisiana outshot Troy (5-8-3, 0-6-3 SBC) by a 19-9 margin and held a 14-5 edge in shots on goal. Natalie Mayes posted five saves to shut down the Troy offense for her fifth shutout of the season and school-record 13th of her career.
Louisiana will return home to close out the regular season on Wednesday (Oct. 29) when it hosts ULM in a 7 p.m. contest at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex. Admission to all Ragin' Cajuns home soccer matches is free.
