MOBILE, Ala. – Natalie Mayes, making her first career start in goal, stopped a career-best eight shots with seven coming in the first half, but Sun Belt Conference West Division leader South Alabama scored five times in the final 45 minutes to claim a 5-0 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Sunday at The Cage.
Five different players scored goals for South Alabama (12-0-3, 5-0-2 SBC), which moved to the top of the SBC overall standings and remained as one of eight teams nationally to be unbeaten. Louisiana, which will return home to face Arkansas State on Thursday in a 7 p.m. contest, dropped to 5-7-2 overall and 2-5-0 in SBC play.
Mayes, playing for an injured Makenna Garcia, held her own in the opening half, stopping three attempts by the Jaguars in the first 25 minutes of the match. The freshman stopped three more USA attempts late in the opening half including a pair from Chaira Singarella.
The Jaguars would score twice in a two-minute span in the second half on goals by Abby Jacobs and Rebecca Calderoni Martinez before Gabby Hollar scored her SBC-leading 10th goal of the season in the 74th minute.
Sydney Ham and Kailey Littleford added goals for South Alabama, which improved to 16-1-4 at home over the past three seasons.
Megan Bradley recorded the lone shot for Louisiana when her attempt in the 78th minute slipped past the left post.
