Kurihara scores sixth goal of season; Louisiana to host nationally-ranked Texas State on Sept. 10
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team battled unbeaten Mississippi State to the final whistle Thursday evening, but the Bulldogs scored the deciding goal in the second half to claim a 2-1 victory at MSU Soccer Field.
Louisiana (4-2-1) received a first-half goal from Miku Kurihara but could not find the equalizer after Mississippi State's Hailey Johnson scored in the 64th minute to give the Bulldogs the lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns finished with seven shots – the most allowed by the Bulldogs in six matches – and put five attempts on goal, keeping Mississippi State goalkeeper Jenny Harrison busy throughout the match. Carson Glenn led Louisiana with three shots, including two on target, while Kurihara added two shots, both on goal.
Mississippi State (6-0-0) held a 22-7 advantage in shots and put 13 attempts on target. Louisiana goalkeeper Natalie Mayes made seven saves in the first half before Ally Allen took over after halftime and recorded four saves.
The Bulldogs struck first in the eighth minute when Laila Murillo converted a penalty kick to give Mississippi State a 1-0 advantage.
Louisiana answered less than 10 minutes later when Kurihara scored her sixth goal of the season in the 17th minute. The sophomore midfielder collected the equalizer unassisted to send the teams into halftime tied 1-1.
Mississippi State regained the lead in the 64th minute when Johnson scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Kati Anne Shepherd.
The Cajuns continued to pressure the Bulldogs late in the match. Glenn had a shot blocked in the 82nd minute before Maria Reyes forced a save from Harrison moments later. Glenn also put a shot on goal in the 89th minute, but Harrison made the stop to preserve the Mississippi State victory.
Louisiana returns home Thursday, Sept. 10, to host former Sun Belt Conference foe and No. 17-ranked Texas State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Home Bank Soccer & Track Complex. Admission to all Louisiana home soccer matches is free.
