LAFAYETTE, La. – In a slightly shortened contest due to thunderstorms, the Louisiana soccer team scored a season-high five goals in a 5-1 victory over Texas Southern on Sunday afternoon at the Cajuns Soccer Complex.

With 6:50 to play in the match, the game was called after heavy rain and lightning fell upon the soccer complex.

The Ragin' Cajuns (3-2) struck early as sophomore forward Annika Schmidt netted her first goal of the season in the seventh minute. Both teams scrambled to gain control of the ball on the left side of the box near the posts before Schmidt took possession and put Louisiana on top, 1-0.

Freshman forward Danielle DeRosa increased the Cajuns' advantage in the 18th minute as she placed a beautiful ball over Texas Southern goalkeeper Liliana Hernandez from the top of the box for a 2-0 lead.

Out of halftime, the Lady Tigers (0-5) got on the board as Marlyn Campa stole the ball from a Louisiana defender before finding the right side of the net for a 2-1 contest in the 48th minute.

After a red card was issued on the Cajuns in the 57th minute, Louisiana looked to pick up the intensity playing one man down. The Cajuns owned the latter part of the match with DeRosa recording her second goal of the match and team-leading fourth of the season in the 67th minute with a shot from the right side of the box off an assist from freshman midfielder Ashleigh Cade.

Sophomore midfielder Kimberly Grasso stretched the Louisiana lead to 4-1 three minutes later with a shot from 20 yards out that sailed over goalie Rebecca Hajny. Freshman forward Denice Emokpae rounded out the scoring for the Ragin' Cajuns on the day with a score in the 78th minute, bringing Hajny out from between the posts and finding the left corner of the net for the 5-1 final.

DeRosa led the Cajuns with six shots, three being on target to help Louisiana outshoot the Lady Tigers 26-7. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alexias Stricklin (3-2) recorded two saves in the victory, while Hernandez (0-5) took the loss, allowing two goals in 45 minutes while picking up five saves.

Louisiana is back on the road Friday with a trip to Ruston to take on Louisiana Tech in a 7 p.m. match against the Lady Techsters.
