LAFAYETTE, La. – Suffering their first home loss of the 2014 season, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team could not mount a second half comeback Friday night at the Cajuns Soccer Complex, dropping a 2-1 decision to Georgia State in their Sun Belt Conference opener.
Â
The Panthers (3-5-3, 1-0-0 SBC) scored both of their goals in the first half, sandwiched around a Louisiana score. Despite a 6-3 shot advantage for the Ragin' Cajuns in the second half, the Panthers defense held strong and allowed just two of those shots to go on target. For the match, Georgia State owned a 11-10 shot advantage and a 5-4 shots on goal lead over Louisiana.
Â
The Panthers went up early in the match as an own goal off the Louisiana defense put Georgia State up 1-0 in the ninth minute.
Â
However, Louisiana (5-4-1, 0-1-0 SBC) responded shortly after with a score from sophomore midfielder Kimberly Grasso, her third of the season. Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Brammer found Grasso near the top of the box before Grasso fired the ball over goalkeeper Brie Haynes to knot the match up at 1-1 in the 17th minute.
Â
Near the end of the first half, Nikki Fedele recorded what would end up being the game-winning goal for the Panthers as she sent a shot from the right side of the box into the net off a pass from Ashley Nagy for a 2-1 lead in the 43rd minute.
Â
Haynes (3-4-2) earned the win for Georgia State, collecting three saves in 90 minutes of action, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alexias Stricklin (5-4-1) suffered the loss with three saves to her name.
Louisiana returns to the pitch Sunday at noon when it hosts Georgia Southern at the Cajuns Soccer Complex.
