Louisiana ties program record for goals scored

Box Score (PDF)

LAFAYETTE, La. – It was a game for the record books as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team tied the program record for goals scored and posted a program-high 26 points and 20 shots on goal in a 10-1 victory over Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon.

The Cajuns' 10 goals matched the record set back on Aug. 29, 2003 when Louisiana defeated Jackson State, 10-0. The Cajuns' 26 points broke the previous mark of 24, also against Jackson State, and the 20 shots on goal surpassed the previous school record of 17, which occurred on Oct. 21, 2005 against Troy and Sept. 22, 2002 against ULM. With the win, the Cajuns improved to 4-0-1 at home this season and have outscored their opponents 26-5 in those five matches.

Louisiana (5-3-1) totaled 35 shots on the day, which tied for second all-time and was just two shots from a program best. The Ragin' Cajuns held the Lady Braves (0-3) to just two shots for the match.

"Leading up to this weekend – last Sunday, Friday night's effort and today is all about getting better for next Friday's conference match," said head coach Scot Wieland. "I think we were able to build a lot of confidence this last week."

The Cajuns began their offensive explosion in the eighth minute as senior defender Grace Howell-Harries found senior midfielder Tina Sanchez, who put one away from five yards out to give Louisiana an early 1-0 lead.

In the 28th minute, freshman midfielder Jorgie Smith recorded her first career goal by bringing goalkeeper Maegan Aria out from between the posts and dribbling by the Lady Braves defense to push the Cajuns' lead to 2-0.

Louisiana posted three goals in less than two minutes beginning in the 35th minute. Freshman midfielder Natalie Lebamoff also posted her first career goal off a pass into the box from freshman midfielder Madison Duncan for a 3-0 score. Freshman forward Danielle DeRosa then added two goals for the Cajuns with the first coming off a pass from freshman midfielder Ashleigh Cade, who found DeRosa in the box from the right side. DeRosa then pushed the Louisiana advantage to 5-0 in the 37th minute. Aria stretched out after DeRosa's kick, but the ball continued to roll past her and found the right corner of the net for her second goal of the match.

The Lady Braves struck in the 40th minute with a goal from Jessica Joe-Cobblah from the right side of the box to make it a 5-1 score at the half.

Louisiana took little time in stretching their lead in the second period after sophomore forward Yazmin Montoya connected on two goals. Freshman midfielder Hannah Alba found Montoya from the right side of the field on the first goal in the 46th minute before Montoya added another four minutes later with a shot from inside the box for a 7-1 score.

Alba assisted on another Louisiana goal in the 61st minute as she sent a pass to freshman forward Denice Emokpae, who brought Aria out before finding the net for an 8-1 contest. Emokpae added her second score of the match in the 78th minute as she sailed a shot over Aria off an assist from sophomore forward MacKenzie Higgins. Emokpae's two goals were sandwiched around sophomore forward Annika Schmidt's goal in the 70th minute with a shot from the left side of the box to round out the Cajuns scoring.

Montoya led Louisiana with seven shots on the day, while Emokpae added five shots and a team-high four shots on goal. Redshirt freshman goalie Alexias Stricklin (5-3-1) picked up the win for the Cajuns, allowing the one goal in 45 minutes of action, while Aria (0-3) took the loss with the 10 goals against while also picking up 10 saves.

Louisiana begins Sun Belt Conference play Friday with a match against Georgia State at 7 p.m. before hosting Georgia Southern on Sunday at 12 p.m.

"This season so far, we've done well at home," Wieland said. "The girls have responded well. It's always nice to start off conference play at home in front of your own crowd."
