LAFAYETTE, La. – In their first overtime match of the 2014 season, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team played Houston to a 1-1 draw Friday night at the Cajuns Soccer Complex.
Â
After a quiet first half offensively that saw both teams combine for just five shots, freshman midfielder Whitney Taggart gave the Cajuns (4-3-1) a 1-0 advantage with a header from inside the box off a pass from senior defender Grace Howell-Harries in the 51st minute.
Â
However, the Cougars (1-2-4) didn't take long in answering the Cajuns' goal as Alexis Weaver found Georgia Dolence inside the box from the right side of the field before Dolence fired the ball between the posts to even the match in the 53rd minute.
Â
"After the first 15 minutes, we got confident and once we got confident we played really well," said head coach Scot Wieland. "We were getting players forward and getting opportunities. Our possession tonight was fantastic. I think this game tonight as well as we controlled the possession and our movement off the ball and having chances really sets the tone going into conference."
Â
Neither team was able to strike again the remainder of the second half, sending the match into overtime. In the first overtime, the Ragin' Cajuns held a 4-0 shot advantage, but were unable to place a shot on goal in the 10 minutes of play.
Â
In the 101st minute, sophomore midfielder Kimberly Grasso almost propelled the Cajuns to a win with a shot from inside the box that rolled just wide of the left post. The Cougars also got a couple of good looks at the goal late in the second overtime with shots from Hailey Kirkwood and Lexa Green that were snatched up by redshirt freshman goalie Alexias Stricklin.
Â
Louisiana held a 15-10 shot advantage, while Houston owned a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Jorgie Smith led the Cajuns with four shots on the night, while Grasso added three to pace the Louisiana offense. For Houston, Dolence tallied four shots in the match to lead the Cougars.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns close out their nonconference slate Sunday when they host Alcorn State for a 1 p.m. match at the Cajuns Soccer Complex.
