Eighth-Inning Grand Slam Lifts Texas State Past Cajuns, 4-1

3/20/2026 10:27:00 PM | Baseball

Series resumes on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Jaquae Stewart hit the first pitch he saw for a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning as Texas State defeated No. 25-ranked Louisiana, 4-1, in the opening game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series on Friday before a crowd of 1,423 at Bobcat Ballpark.

The eighth inning produced the game's only runs as Kyle Froehlich and Sawyer Pruitt were locked in a classic pitcher's duel for seven innings.

Froehlich allowed just two hits over the first seven innings for Texas State (13-8, 1-3 SBC) and retired 16 consecutive batters after Mark Collins singled with two outs in the second inning. Froehlich recorded nine of his 10 strikeouts during that stretch and departed after Steven Spalitta tripled to deep right-center field to lead off the eighth. Blaze Rodriguez then lined a one-out single to left field off reliever Wade Cooper (1-0) to break the scoreless tie.

Meanwhile, Louisiana starter Sawyer Pruitt sparkled through a season-high seven innings of work, allowing three hits while walking two and striking out eight in a 99-pitch performance. Pruitt departed after allowing a hit and a walk with two outs in the seventh before getting Clayton Namken to hit into a force play. Pruitt did not allow a runner past second base during his outing.

Louisiana (16-6, 2-2 SBC) turned to right-hander Parker Smith (0-2) in the bottom of the eighth inning. Smith retired the first two hitters before Jackson Cotton singled, Manny Salas was hit by a pitch and Rashawn Galloway walked to load the bases.

Freshman left-hander Cole Flanagan relieved, and Stewart hit the first-pitch fastball over the right-field wall for the game-winning grand slam.

The teams will meet in Game 2 of the series Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Louisiana is expected to send Andrew Herrmann (3-0, 2.88 ERA) to the mound in an attempt to even the series.
