Ragin' Cajuns, Bobcats set for SBC swan song
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The No. 25-ranked Louisiana baseball team continues its four-game road trip on Friday when it opens a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against Texas State at Bobcat Ballpark.
First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. The series continues Saturday at 2:30 p.m. before concluding Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be available on ESPN+. Fans in the Lafayette area can listen on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on The Varsity Network app.
The series marks the final meeting between the schools as Sun Belt Conference members. Texas State (12-8, 0-3 SBC) will officially join the Pac-12 Conference on July 1. The teams have met annually since Texas State joined the Sun Belt in 2014, with the Ragin' Cajuns holding a 34-23 advantage in the all-time series.
Louisiana (16-5, 2-1 SBC) opened its trip to the Lone Star State on Wednesday with a 6-3, 10-inning victory over Big 12 opponent Houston at Schroeder Park. A trio of Texas natives — Ty Roman (Diboll), Colt Brown (Seguin) and Cody Brasch (Haslet) — each played key roles in the win.
Roman tossed a season-high 5.2 innings, while Brasch struck out five over the final 2.2 innings to earn the victory. Brown extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a solo home run — his first in a Louisiana uniform — to lead off the fourth inning.
Brown, a freshman catcher, leads Louisiana with a .351 batting average and ranks among the Sun Belt leaders with nine doubles.
Lee Amedee (.288), Drew Markle (.284), Blaze Rodriguez (.282) and Rigoberto Hernandez (.275) round out Louisiana's top hitters. The Ragin' Cajuns are batting .257 as a team and have recorded 44 bases, the second-most in the Sun Belt.
Louisiana's pitching and defense have been the team's strengths early in the season. The Ragin' Cajuns carry a 4.16 team ERA, the third-lowest in the conference, while their .982 fielding percentage leads the Sun Belt and ranks 28th nationally.
Freshman Sawyer Pruitt (2-1, 1.74 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday's opener for Louisiana. Andrew Herrmann (3-0, 2.84 ERA) is slated to pitch Saturday, with JR Tollett (4-0, 5.28 ERA) set for Sunday.
Texas State dropped its fifth consecutive game Tuesday with a road loss to No. 23 Texas A&M. The Bobcats were swept by ULM to open conference play last weekend and began their current skid with a 15-4 home loss to No. 2 Texas.
Despite the recent stretch, Texas State is 9-3 at home this season with series wins over Gonzaga and Washington State and a sweep of Niagara.
Rashawn Galloway enters the series riding a 13-game hitting streak. During that span, the senior is batting .481 (26-for-54) with 12 RBI, 12 runs scored and nine doubles.
Galloway leads the Bobcats with a .373 batting average and is joined by Manny Salas (.343) as the team's only hitters above .300.
Freshman Jackson Cotton leads Texas State with five home runs and has added 16 runs scored, 14 RBI and eight stolen bases. Dawson Park ranks fourth in the Sun Belt with 27 RBI while adding four home runs.
Kyle Froehlich will make his sixth consecutive Friday start for the Bobcats and enters with a 2-1 record, a 4.98 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. Sam Hall is expected to start Saturday after recording 11 strikeouts in 8.0 innings across four starts. Jesus Tovar will round out the rotation Sunday with a 4-1 record, a 2.49 ERA and a team-high 26 strikeouts.
