New board to honor 1978 team; will add to both player and fan experience

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Department of Athletics has received a $375,000 gift to support the installation of a new, state-of-the-art digital scoreboard at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field, with the fully digital display scheduled to debut in 2027.
In recognition of this investment in Ragin' Cajuns Baseball, the scoreboard will be named in honor of the 1978 Ragin' Cajuns Baseball Team. A dedication ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2027, with members of the team in attendance.
"It's a big-league video board, and it's only possible because of the generosity of our great fan base," Louisiana head coach Matt Deggs said. "The community has made a tremendous personal investment into our program, our players and everything we're trying to build here. We're incredibly thankful to Cajun Nation, Interim Director of Athletics Trey Frazier and his team for making this possible. It's going to enhance our ballpark in a big way and elevate the experience for both our fans and our players.
"We have a lot of positive things happening right now, with funding for the clubhouse nearing completion and the video board scheduled to be in place before the season. We have a great team in place, a lot of momentum and plenty of excitement surrounding our program. We're so grateful for those who continue to invest in Louisiana Baseball and help make these improvements possible."
The '78 Cajuns were the first team to play in Moore Field and, at the time, set records for wins and shutouts pitched, with several players going on to play professionally. Individually, Jose Alvarez set records, which still stand today, for shutouts in a season, career shutouts and complete games. Jose is a member of the Ragin' Cajuns Athletics Hall of Fame, being inducted in 2019.
"On behalf of the 1978 Ragin' Cajun Baseball Team, we are extremely proud and humbled to be honored this way," said Raymond Richard, a member of the '78 Cajuns. "It was a very special time in our lives. Personal relationships among our team members were forged, which have continued for almost 50 years. Many of the girls we dated in college became our wives and life-long partners. Even though we had players from all over the country, we came together as a brotherhood. It is a special privilege for all of us to have played for the Cajuns and to be memorialized this way."
