Louisiana sets single-season record for team assists; draws the No. 6 seed in next week's SBC Championships

JONESBORO, Ark. – Louisiana closed out the regular season in record-setting fashion Sunday, earning a 2-1 victory over Arkansas State at the A-State Soccer Complex to secure its school-record 11th win of the season.

The Ragin' Cajuns (11-5-3, 5-3-2 SBC) established another program mark, recording their 32nd assist of the season to set a new single-season record. Louisiana finished the regular season with five victories in Sun Belt Conference play – the first time since 2013 – and drew the No. 6 seed in the SBC Championships which begin on November 9 in Foley, Ala.

After building a first-half lead, Louisiana responded to an Arkansas State equalizer in the second half with a late goal from freshman Madelyn Linenkugel, who delivered the game-winner in the 88th minute.

Salma Elhaimer gave the Ragin' Cajuns an early advantage in the sixth minute, finishing a pass from Maria Reyes to put Louisiana ahead 1-0. The goal marked Elhaimer's third of the season and Reyes' first assist of the afternoon.

Arkansas State (3-9-4, 1-7-2 SBC) pulled even in the 66th minute when Kennedy Horn scored off an assist from Freya Sinclair.

With the match level and time winding down, Louisiana found the breakthrough as Elhaimer set up Linenkugel, who finished her second goal of the season to put the Ragin' Cajuns back in front, 2-1.

The Cajuns held an 8-7 lead in total shots, recording seven in the final 45 minutes. Natalie Mayes recorded her 24th career victory in goal for Louisiana, tying the program record set by Amanda Moorefield from 2008-12.

Louisiana will now turn its attention to the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Championships in Foley, Alabama. The Ragin' Cajuns drew the No. 6 seed and will face third-seeded App State in the tournament's opening round on Monday, Nov. 9.
