Three Cajuns in top-20 heading into final round
ESTERO, Fla. – Malan Potgieter posted rounds of 71 and 73 to finish five shots off the individual lead and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team finished in a fourth-place tie after the opening day of the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate on Monday at Old Corkscrew Golf Club.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played on Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available at RaginCajuns.com.
Louisiana opened with a 3-under-par 285 in the opening round before scores toughened in the second. The Ragin' Cajuns posted a 301 in the afternoon round to finish at 586 after 36 holes and tied with James Madison. Florida Atlantic (570) claimed the first-day lead with Troy (577) and host Florida Gulf Coast (579) ahead.
Potgieter recorded a 1-under 71 in the opening round before shooting a 1-over 73 to finish tied for eighth overall at even-par 144. The junior finished five strokes behind first-day, co-leaders Guilerhme Grinberg of FAU and FGCU's Nolan Harper.
Eli Ortego posted identical rounds of 1-over 73 to finish tied for 15th for Louisiana. Kyle Bennett opened the day for the Ragin' Cajuns with a 2-under-par before his 78 in the second round snapped a streak of 10 straight rounds of finishing at par or below.
Carter Schmitt finished tied for 29th for Louisiana with rounds of 71 and 79 while Jean Louis du Plessis posted rounds of 78 and 77.
