Second round play to resume at 7:45 a.m.; final round set for 9 a.m.
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – UL's golf team flirted with the top of the standings here Monday in the opening round of The Clerico tournament, but struggled at the end of both of Monday's first two rounds.
That added up to a 10th place finish going into Tuesday's final trip around the demanding 7,004-yard par-70 Cedar Ridge Country Club course just outside of Tulsa. But, the Ragin' Cajuns stand only seven shots back of fourth place after the first two rounds.
The Cajuns shot a 14-over 294 total in the morning round Monday after standing at 2-over through the first nine holes and holding the top spot in the team standings. UL stands at 16-over-par as a team with two players – sophomore James Holtsclaw and freshman Jack Carter – unable to finish their final hole due to darkness.
In all, players on seven of the 13 teams in the field will return to the course at 7:45 p.m. to complete the second round, before teams are re-paired for a 9 a.m. shotgun start for Tuesday's final round.
"The guys were playing really well for the first 75 percent of the first round, and had the lead for a little bit," said UL coach Theo Sliman. "But on this type of course, you can't let up or you can put together a lot of bogeys in a row. We finished poorly in the first round and then had a lull late in the evening."
Fourth-year senior Ellis Bright of Bath, England, posted an even-par 70 in the morning round, carding two birdies and two bogeys, and was at one-over par through 31 holes before a double-bogey at the par-five 14th hole. Bright, though, rallied with birdies on the next two holes, the par-three 15th and the par-four 16th, to finish at three-over 143 for the first two rounds and tied for 10th individually.
"Ellis had the one hiccup," Sliman said, "but he put the bit between his teeth and finished with those two birdies. Very proud of the way he fought back.
Sophomore Drew Sliman of Lafayette also stands in the top 25 individually, posting a birdie on the par-four 18th hole to finish at 75-72—147 (+7). The other three in the lineup – fourth-year senior Carter Schmitt, Holtsclaw and Carter – are all at 11-over-par, with Schmitt posting 74-77—151 and Holtsclaw and Carter still to play the 18th to finish the second round.
"We were still too inconsistent," Sliman said. "On the flip side, this type of golf that we've been playing on some very demanding golf courses will expose you and teach you if you're willing to learn. We have to learn that even if you get off to a hot start, you can give that hot start away pretty quickly. I was proud of Drew posting that 72 in the second round."
Nationally third-ranked New Mexico leads the tournament at 13-over 573 (284-289), holding a three-stroke lead over tournament host Oral Roberts (286-290—576, +16) among the six teams that completed play. Sun Belt Conference member South Alabama is third at 19-over but also has two players having to finish the second round on Tuesday.
New Mexico's Johnnie Clark is the individual leader after back-to-back three-under rounds, with his 67-67—134 good enough for a four-stroke lead. Julien Dulait of UTEP is second at two-under 138, with Jake Rodgers of Colorado State also at two-under with two holes left to play.
A total of 26 players in the 76-player field will finish the second round Tuesday before the start of the final round. Pairings and live scoring are available online at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
