Louisiana looks to bookend solid performance from fall opener

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – UL's golf team will wrap up the fall portion of its 2026-27 schedule here Monday and Tuesday when the Ragin' Cajuns participate in The Clerico hosted by Oral Roberts.

The Cajuns will be making their fifth fall outing and will look to recapture the success of their first fall event, hoping to bookend their near-championship at September's Sandestin Collegiate Classic with a solid outing at one of collegiate golf's prestigious fall events.

UL will also be making its second appearance at The Clerico when play begins Monday over the 7,392-yard par-71 Cedar Ridge Country Club course just outside of Tulsa. The Cajuns finished 10th of 13 teams two years ago.

Participating teams include Kansas State, San Jose State, New Mexico, North Alabama, UTEP, New Mexico State, North Texas, Colorado State, UTRGV and Sun Belt Conference members South Alabama and Louisiana Tech along with the Cajuns and the host ORU team. Monday's two rounds begin at 7:45 a.m. with tee times off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees, with Tuesday's final-round shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Since the Sandestin meet, where UL led after two rounds and wound up three strokes from winning the team title, it has been a struggle. A young Cajun team finished ninth of 12 teams at the Chicago Highlands Invitational, 11th of 14 at the Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek, and 16th of 16 last week at the Moraine Intercollegiate in Dayton, Ohio.

"These guys are trying too hard to play perfect golf," said Cajun coach Theo Sliman. "We need to go into this tournament and all recognize we don't have to do anything out of the ordinary. We just need to minimize mistakes … the best way to be more consistent is eliminate dumb mistakes, and if that happens our confidence will shift and our talent will show."

Sophomores James Holtsclaw of Shreveport and Drew Sliman of Lafayette are the only Cajuns to play in all five fall events, with Holtsclaw leading the team with a 73.5 stroke average and playing in the No. 1 position for Monday's two rounds. Fourth-year senior Ellis Bright of Bath, England, who has the team's best individual finish with a tie for fourth at the Sandestin event and is second on the team at 73.67, returns to the lineup after missing last week's Moraine tournament.

Fourth-year senior Carter Schmitt (74.44) and freshman Jack Carter (73.89, third on team), both of Baton Rouge, round out the lineup for The Clerico, with sophomore Nathan Schuldt of Pretoria, South Africa, participating as an individual. With this lineup, all nine members of the Cajun squad have played in at least two of the five fall events.

"I have no doubt the talent we have on this team is high," Sliman said. "They're a very talented group. But you have to adapt and handle adversity, and that's what I want to see in our final fall event. We're playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores and it's time they stepped it up a little bit."
