Louisiana to open spring schedule in mid-February at Border Olympics

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – UL's golf team jumped up three spots in the final round and finished in a tie for seventh place as a team Tuesday at the prestigious The Clerico tournament.

The Ragin' Cajuns carded a 10-over-par 290 on Tuesday, their best round of the 54-hole event, and finished at 294-297-290—881 over three rounds at the 7,004-yard par-70 Cedar Ridge Country Club just outside of Tulsa. The Clerico was the fifth and final event on UL's fall schedule.

Fourth-year senior Ellis Bright of Bath, England, and sophomore Drew Sliman of Lafayette both finished in the top 25 individually in tying for 24th, with Sliman posting a second straight two-over 72 on Tuesday that included four birdies to finish at nine-over 219 for his best individual finish in the fall. Bright had opened with 70-73 rounds on Monday and carded a 76 on Tuesday to also finish at nine-over 219.

Sophomore James Holtsclaw had Tuesday's low round for the Cajuns, matching two birdies with two bogeys for an even-par 70. The Shreveport product finished tied for 38th at 13-over 223, tying with Cajun teammate Carter Schmitt after the fourth-year senior from Baton Rouge had his best round of the tournament, a two-over 72 on Tuesday.

Freshman Jack Carter of Baton Rouge finished with a 78 Tuesday and tied for 63rd while sophomore Nathan Schuldt of Pretoria, South Africa, finished with a 79 and was 76th playing as an individual.
Tournament host Oral Roberts had the day's low team round with a two-under 278 – the only sub-par team round of the three-round, 13-team event -- and won the team title by 10 strokes at 14-over-par 854. First-day leader and third-ranked New Mexico finished at 11-over 291 in the final round for a 24-over 864 tournament total, while Kansas State and South Alabama tied for third at 25-over 865

ORU's Ben Gratzi carded a six-under 64 Tuesday – the low round of the tournament by three shots – and took the individual title by two strokes over first-day leader Johnnie Clark of New Mexico with a 69-71-64—204 (-6) finish.

UL will return to action and begin its spring season on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 15-16, when the Cajuns take part in the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas. UL won the team title at the Border meet two years ago and finished eighth last season.
