Stelly, Higgs each homer as Cajuns get first complete-game shutout since 2021
LAFAYETTE – JR Tollett posted Louisiana's first, complete-game shutout in nearly four years while Caleb Stelly and Conor Higgs each belted solo home runs to lead the Ragin' Cajuns to a 3-0 win over James Madison to complete a three-game sweep on Sunday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Casey Artigues added a pinch-hit, RBI single in the fourth inning while Lee Amedee had two hits as Louisiana (14-15, 6-3 SBC) moved to within a half-game of first-place Southern Miss in the Sun Belt Conference standings.
Tollett (3-2), making his fourth career start, allowed four hits – three of them to JMU's Coleman Calabrese – while striking out a career-high 11 batters with no walks. The Ruston native pitched Louisiana's first complete-game shutout since Connor Cooke against Arkansas State on April 10, 2021 while his 11 strikeouts were the most by a Cajun since LP Langevin's 10 at Coastal Carolina on April 20, 2024.
The right-hander retired the side in the third inning before setting eight straight batters down beginning with a strikeout to Nic Poole in the sixth. Tollett allowed singles by Calabrese in the first, fourth and sixth innings while Kyle Langley's double off the glove of Amedee in the second accounted for the Dukes' other hit.
Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Stelly hit the fifth pitch from JMU starter Jayden Barroqueiro (0-2) for his fifth homer of the season. The Ragin' Cajuns stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the third before taking a 2-0 lead in the fourth.
Owen Galt led off the inning when he hit the first pitch from JMU reliever Holden McKinney up the middle before Griffin Hebert drew a two-out walk. Artigues then followed with an opposite-field, pinch-hit single to left to drive in Galt and record his first hit in a Louisiana uniform.
Higgs, who tripled in the first two games of the series, led off the fifth with a 413-foot blast to left-center field – his 10th homer of the season – to give Louisiana its final run of the game.
Barroqueiro, making his third start of the season, took the loss for JMU (9-19, 4-5 SBC) after allowing four hits with a strikeout in 3.0 innings. Calabrese capped off an impressive weekend at the plate for the Dukes going 3-for-4 in the finale and 8-for-13 (.615) for the weekend.
Louisiana will continue its nine-game homestand with a pair of midweek games against in-state opponents beginning on Tuesday. The Ragin' Cajuns will host Northwestern State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before facing Louisiana Tech on Wednesday.
