Jacobs Sets Meet Record, Cajuns in Contention After Opening Night of SBC Indoor Championships

Louisiana’s men sit second overall after the opening night, while the women are fifth
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - After one night of the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, the Louisiana track and field team is in contention on the men's and women's side for the championship. The men are second overall with 31 points while the women are fifth with 21. Arkansas State leads on both sides with the men posting 57 points and the women 29.
The performance of freshman Lawson Jacobs highlighted the day. He broke the SBC Indoor Championship meet record in the 400m at 46.70, beating Dominick Yancy's record of 46.89 set in 2022. Jacobs also ran the fourth-fastest 60m in school history at 6.74 and qualified for the finals with the fastest time in the field in both events.
Madelyn McCabe got the day going for the Cajuns by placing fourth in the pentathlon. The senior's score of 3,634 was the second most in school history. Lily Murray followed her with a fifth-place finish in the weight throw at 63-1.75. Reem Tammam rounded out the day for the women in field events by taking fifth in the long jump at 19-1.25.
Isabelle Russell ran the second-fastest 5,000m in school history in 17:05.77 to place fifth in the event.
Oliver Jack scored big for the men, taking second in the weight throw. His throw of 64-11.25 was 0.25 inches short of first. RJ Wilson came in fourth with a personal best throw of 60-7.75. Louisiana also had a pair of athletes score in the men's pole vault with a pair of personal bests. Teodor Borgius took third after clearing 17-1 while teammate Timothy Gale was fourth at 16-9.25. The men also finished on the podium in the DMR. Matthew Maynard, Josiah Whitaker, Andrew Leck, and Louden Boudreaux finished third at 10:12.05, while also moving to fifth in program history in the event.
Jacobs wasn't the only Cajun to lead after the prelims on Monday. Mark Daley joined him with the best time in the 200m at 21.31. Joe Patterson just missed out on making it four Cajuns at the top of the prelims as he was just edged out by 0.34 seconds in the 800m.
The Cajuns return to the Birmingham Crossplex tomorrow morning for the final day of the SBC Indoor Championships.
