Louisiana’s men claimed their first title since 1996, ending Arkansas State’s run of five straight titles

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - After 26 years the Louisiana men's track and field team is the Indoor Champion of the Sun Belt Conference after overcoming five-time defending champion Arkansas State in the final two events on Tuesday at the Birmingham Metroplex in Birmingham, Alabama.

Louisiana's men finished the meet with 142 points to win their sixth overall indoor title. They combined to win five events en route to the title, their most since 2010. The women placed fifth with 56 points, their highest finish in three seasons. They had one individual champion and set three school records on the day.

Lawson Jacobs announced to the rest of the conference he'll be a force for the next several years. The freshman won the 400m, shattering his own school and meet record, with a time of 45.92. Jacobs ran the final leg of the 4x400m relay team that won the event and clinched the title for the Cajuns. He also was second in the 60m with a time of 6.72 seconds.

Joe Patterson also had a banner day for the Cajuns. The senior won the 800m with a time of 1:51.80 while also finishing second in the mile at 4:08.32 a personal best. Mark Daley won the men's 200m at 21.23. Jacobs was beaten in the 60m by 0.01 seconds or Louisiana would have won the 60m, 200m, 400m, and 800m.

Jeremy Nelson returned to the top of the SBC in the indoor triple jump for the second time in his Cajun career. The junior's final jump of 51-8.25/15.75m propelled him back to a title.

The lone women's win on the day belonged to Alaysha Veal. Veal's jump of 5-9.75/1.77m not only won the SBC title but broke the school record and became the program's first indoor high jump champion.

The women also took down two more school records on the afternoon. Alexandra Johnson once again lowered her time in the 800m, crossing the finish line in 2:10.03, lowering her record by 0.03 seconds. Ella Segura went low in the 3000m with a time of 9:52.05 to beat Sophie Daigle's record of 9:52.82 set in 2002.

Next up for the Cajuns is the outdoor season which begins at the Cowboy Relays in Lake Charles on March 15.
