Cajuns Fall for First Time at Home in SBC Battle with App State

9/26/2024 10:59:00 PM | Soccer

Louisiana hosted the Mountaineers for the first time since 2019

LAFAYETTE - For the first time this season the Louisiana soccer team didn't come away with a positive result on their home turf, falling to App State 1-0 on Thursday.

Neither offense could get much going early on, combining for seven shots in the opening half. The defensive battle continued in the second half as both goalkeepers needed to make only four saves on the night.

"We were great tonight, very organized," said head coach Chris McBride. "I think the majority of the game we took away a lot of their threats offensively. They're super athletic and their transition is incredible, so I felt like we avoided that quite well."

Louisiana, who came into the night averaging 15.5 shots per game, was kept in check offensively. The Ragin' Cajuns had just four shots total with two landing on goal.

"They dropped into a new system in the first half and made things really difficult for us," said McBride. "They didn't want us to be able to build and they set some really good traps. They came out in the second half in their normal system and that opened us up a bit. They did a good job staying organized and not allowing any threats in behind them."

The match's lone goal came in the 84th minute when Izzi Wood scored her league-leading sixth goal of the season on a perfectly placed shot from outside the 18 into the top left corner of the net.

"That was a moment of brilliance tonight from Izzi," said McBride. "She's a special player that's fun to coach against. It was a really, really well-taken goal and we got beat by a moment of brilliance."

Louisiana hits the road for the first time in SBC action, heading north to take on ULM on Sunday at 5 p.m.
