Kurihara, Glenn provide offense; Mayes stops eight shots in posting 15th career shutout
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Louisiana scored twice in the opening 36 minutes and held Southern Miss scoreless the rest of the way, earning a 2-0 Sun Belt Conference victory Saturday afternoon at the Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex.
The Ragin' Cajuns improved to 9-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in Sun Belt Conference play while extending their current unbeaten run to six matches. Louisiana is 5-0-1 in its last six matches and has outscored its opponents 18-4 during that stretch.
Miku Kurihara opened the scoring in the 16th minute, taking a pass from Carson Glenn and finding the net for her 11th goal of the season. Glenn doubled the lead in the 36th minute with her seventh goal of the season, giving Louisiana a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Southern Miss applied pressure throughout the match, but Natalie Mayes turned aside all eight shots on goal to preserve her 15th career shutout. The senior goalkeeper improved to 22-15-16 in her career, including a 7-1-2 record this season.
Louisiana finished with a 19-16 advantage in shots and put 11 attempts on frame. Glenn led the Cajuns with six shots, including four on goal, while Kurihara added three shots.
The victory marked Louisiana's first win at Southern Miss since Aug. 30, 2015, when the Cajuns earned a 2-1 victory in Hattiesburg. Louisiana also extended its unbeaten streak in the series to two matches after earning a 5-0 win in last year's meeting in Lafayette.
Louisiana returns to action on Thursday when it hosts South Alabama in a 7 p.m. contest at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex. Admission to all Louisiana home soccer matches is free.
