The Ragin’ Cajuns welcome the Mountaineers to Lafayette for the first time since 2019
LAFAYETTEÂ - Coming off a draw in their Sun Belt Conference opener on Sunday, the Louisiana soccer team hosts App State on Thursday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.
The Ragin' Cajuns opened SBC play with a 1-1 draw against Texas State last Sunday. Senior Lucy Ortiz scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season while goalkeeper Natalie Mayes made six saves in the effort.
"They're going to be one of the top teams in the conference this year," said head coach Chris McBride. "To face a team like that earlier on in the conference schedule really sets us up to see where we're going to be. Hopefully, it's a point we can look back on at the end of the year and say it was a good point."
Louisiana looks to get its first win in SBC play against an App State squad that is battle-tested. Winners of two straight on the road, the Mountaineers are led by Izzi Wood's conference-leading five goals.
"We'll have to game plan well to make sure we try and take away as many opportunities as possible," said McBride. "We need to make sure we play to our strengths and pick on their weaknesses. We have a stretch against some really good teams athletically and tactically that will prepare us for the stretch run in conference."
Louisiana hits the road for the first time in SBC action, heading north to take on ULM on Sunday at 5 p.m.
