Senior Lucy Ortiz recorded her fourth goal of the season
LAFAYETTE - Lucy Ortiz scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season as the Louisiana soccer team opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 1-1 draw with Texas State on Sunday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.
"We knew Texas State was going to be tough competition coming into today," said Ortiz. "They've had a tough schedule and performed well. We knew how we performed today would be very indicative of the rest of the season. We put in a shift and got unlucky not to get the win but we played a great game and I'm really proud of this team."
Ortiz put the Cajuns on the board in the 25th minute. Hailly Waterhouse's header off a cross was saved and fell right to the foot of Ortiz, who slammed it home for the early 1-0 lead. Louisiana controlled the pace in the opening half, leading in shots 7-3, with four of them landing on goal.
"We've really improved our game intelligence," said Ortiz. "We're able to adapt tactically much better than we were able to do last season and even from the start of this season. It was something we were going to push ourselves to do and everyone from top to bottom has taken the information we've been given and applied it well into the game."
The Bobcats flipped the script in the second half, outshooting the Cajuns 10-4 with six corner kicks. Natalie Mayes had six second half saves but the Bobcats scored in the 76th minute to even the score.
"One thing we worked on this week was defensive transitions," said Ortiz. "We wanted to continue attacking the ball and being relentless but also prepared to get back behind the ball knowing they were going to go at us. Chloe (Mueller) got her first start and put in a great shift back there and I think everyone pushed themselves to stay locked in."
Louisiana caps a three-game homestand on Thursday against App State beginning at 7 p.m.
