Huge Second Half Leads Louisiana to 4-0 Win Over UTRGV

Louisiana scored three goals in the second half to pull away

LAFAYETTE - In their final tune-up before opening Sun Belt Conference play next weekend, the Louisiana soccer team caught fire in the second half to beat UTRGV, 4-0, on Sunday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex. The Ragin' Cajuns scored three goals in the second half while Natalie Mayes recorded her fifth shutout of the season.

"This pre-conference schedule was huge for us," said senior Mariella Stephens, who had an assist on Sunday. "We've had some great wins and taken something away from each game. Over the last two weeks, we've been especially challenged and grown immensely. I'm really proud of everybody and we're ready to get into conference play."

Louisiana opened the scoring in the 19th minute with Megan Bradley's first off the season, assisted by Stephens. The Ragin' Cajuns held the Vaqueros without a shot in the opening half.

"We were happy to be up at the half but never satisfied," said Stephens. "We talked about going into the second half and controlling whatever we can control. Every person played a certain role and fulfilled it. We stuck together as a team and were able to add a few more goals."

Three times the Cajuns scored in the second half. Tatum Beck found the net in the 52nd minute to push the lead to 2-0. Louisiana didn't stop there, as Sydney Byrnes scored the first of her Cajun career after the Vaqueros tried to clear a corner kick for their third goal of the day. Briana Henry capped the scoring with just three minutes to play for her first of the year.

"We have to continue to be relentless," said Byrnes, who also assisted on Beck's goal. "It doesn't matter what the score is, just have to keep going. You don't want any goals in the back of our net and want to continue to put them in theirs."

The Cajuns are off until next Sunday when they open conference play at home. They'll host Texas State at 1 p.m. at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.
