Red and White Scrimmage Signals Start of 2024 Season

The season officially kicks off next Thursday at McNeese
LAFAYETTE - As they gear up for the 2024 season, Louisiana soccer fans will have the first opportunity to catch the team on Thursday at 7 p.m. as the team plays in the red and white scrimmage to open the year. The season officially gets underway next Thursday at McNeese.

The Ragin' Cajuns spent much of the offseason working on their fitness. With the players taking charge to work on that it's allowed the team to come into the fall and focus on the little things.

"All the girls put so much work in over the summer," said senior Lucy Ortiz. "This season really started in January, people took care of business and put in the time over the summer. We feel like we've been able to come out and show our fitness. Getting to play in a scrimmage is something we feel like we've earned and we're excited to hit the ground running."
Â
Louisiana returns nine players from their final starting lineup of last year. With the familiarity of that many returners with experience along with some talented freshmen, the Cajuns feel like they have the pieces for a successful season. That blend starts with the backline, where faces new and old have made a difference.

"The backline has been terrific. Sienna Hurrell, Lauren Bennett, Lily Parker, and Sydney Byrnes have come together really well in practice," said senior Hailly Waterhouse. "Just seeing how much growth our backline has had and being able to play out the back is going to be really helpful this year."

The players on the backline aren't the only ones turning heads in camp. Ortiz believes there's a freshman forward who could make an immediate impact.

"Adeline Nemeth has really come in and shown a lot as a freshman," Ortiz said. "She's constantly working off the ball and her movement is smart. I think a lot of her forward runs are something you see out of a more veteran player, as is her work ethic."

The team kicks off the red and white scrimmage at 7 p.m. from the Home Bank Soccer & Track Complex. The team will open the season on the road at McNeese on August 15, before starting a five-game home stand against Louisiana Tech on August 18.
