Louisiana Hosts Grambling to Close Long Homestand

LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana soccer team closes a five-game homestand as they host Grambling on Sunday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.

Louisiana is undefeated this season thanks to a stingy defense. That defense has allowed just two goals, the fewest through five games in program history, and has needed just six saves out of goalkeeper Natalie Mayes.

"We've adopted some new tactics defensively this season," said Mayes. "From the centerbacks all the way to the forwards it starts with the front line. They're making my job a lot easier."

The Ragin' Cajuns have controlled the pace in all five games this season. They've outshot opponents 91-27 with 44 landing on goal. They've done it with a mixture of players, getting goals from six different players and assists from seven.

"Our press has been completely different this year," added Mayes. "We've taken a new mindset and been able to lock teams in the final third with our press."

While the series with Grambling has been historically lopsided, Louisiana is 3-0 and leads 12-0 in scoring, the Tigers went 15-5-4 last season and won the SWAC. Louisiana looks to win for the first time on Sunday this season after playing to a scoreless draw in the previous two.

"Heading into Sunday we know our opponent, their strengths, and where we can look to counter," said Mayes. "If we play the way we've been playing good things will happen against a tough opponent."
