Cajuns Continue Hot Start in Shutout Win Over Grambling

9/1/2024 8:19:00 PM | Soccer

Louisiana improved to 4-0-2 on the season, the longest they’ve gone unbeaten to start a season

LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana soccer team capped off a perfect five-match homestand on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Grambling. The Ragin' Cajuns improved to 4-0-2 with their fourth shutout of the season. It marks the longest time Louisiana has gone unbeaten to start a season and matches the second-longest unbeaten streak in program history.

"You definitely want to make your home field an advantage," said head coach Chris McBride. "We wanted to play with purpose and with pride and I think we've done that through the first six games."

As they've done in every game this season, the Cajuns struck first. Lucy Ortiz scored in the 19th minute of the game, her second of the season. It looked like the score would remain there but in the 41st minute, Sophie Placke found enough space to score the team's second goal.

"This week in practice we worked on different runs to make and tried different things," said Placke. "We just executed the game plan and it led to a goal."

Coming into the day the Ragin' Cajuns looked for their first win on a Sunday, playing to a scoreless draw in the previous two contests. Looking for the win, the Cajuns shook up the starting lineup, with three players earning their first start of the season.

"These last few games have been against tough opponents," said McBride. "We wanted to play some players to bring some freshness to the lineup. We started the game off well and they got into a groove. With it still being hot at the start time and how we played through the game I thought we played really well."

Sunday was a physical contest, seeing a combined 31 fouls and three yellow cards assessed, including two on the Cajuns. Grambling, the defending SWAC champions, kept the Louisiana offense in check while getting off 10 shots of their own.

"Our mindset this season has not to worry about who we're playing," said Placke. "Just going in with grit and controlling what we can control while playing our game."

Louisiana looks to match the longest unbeaten streak in program history on Thursday at Rice with kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
