The team earned their largest win since 2021 on Thursday
LAFAYETTE - Coming off the largest win in the Chris McBride era, the Louisiana soccer team looks to continue their hot start on Sunday against Florida Atlantic at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex on Sunday at noon.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns came out firing on Thursday, scoring early and often in their 5-1 victory over Middle Tennessee. The team got goals from Mariella Stephens, Adeline Nemeth, Sisley Stephens, Lucy Ortiz, and Tori Bockstadter.
Â
"It was super exciting," said Mariella Stephens. "After the game on Sunday, we realized it was a turning point. We came together as a team, performed great for 90 minutes, and it showed on the scoreboard."
Â
Louisiana has dominated possession this season and has been aggressive through three games. The team has outshot opponents 64-21 and leads 36-6 in shots on goal.
Â
"It starts with the coaching staff and how they prepare us for games," said Sisley Stephens. "We've come together as a team and everyone is on the same page."
Â
The team has scored seven goals on the year by six different scorers. A team-first mentality has the players confident heading into the middle of their early homestand.
Â
"We're putting in the work every single day," said Mariella Stephens. "You can tell everybody wants it and everyone knows their role and responsibility. Everyone is fitting the role that they're supposed to play and that's what's caused this cohesion."
Â
It's the second straight year the Cajuns have taken on the Owls, falling last season in Boca Raton, 2-1. The Owls come into Sunday winless but have faced teams like UCF and Miami in the early going.
Â
"Looking back we want more from last year's result," said Sisley Stephens. "It's that growth mindset that we've been working on since January. Even with this new team that's come in, we've been wanting to progress and get better every day."
