Soccer Season Opens Thursday Night in Lake Charles

The Ragin’ Cajuns square off with in-state foe McNeese for the first time since 2018
LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana - The Louisiana soccer team kicks off the 2024 season on Thursday against in-state foe McNeese in Lake Charles, Louisiana. It's the first meeting between the schools since 2018.

"I think there's a lot of excitement and confidence heading into the season," said senior Lauren Bennett. "The butterflies have settled with the work we've put in over the last few weeks and the spring. It's set us up for this moment."

The Ragin' Cajuns have started strong over the last four seasons, going 3-0-1 in openers. Last season the Cajuns played to a draw at Middle Tennessee, 1-1. The team followed that with three straight wins and finished non-conference play 3-2-2 with only two home contests. Getting off to a fast start will be key for the Cajuns who follow Thursday's opener with five in a row at home.

"A strong start would be huge," said senior Mariella Stephens. "You go into the year excited but if you have a stretch where it's not going so well it starts to stem your confidence a bit. Getting off to a good start and getting those wins early is huge."

To get off to that good start the team will need to be high energy from the first whistle.

"We need to go in with a lot of energy," said Bennett. "We need to consistently put in the necessary energy even when things get hard. There will be parts of the season where it's hard to keep going but if we're consistent in bringing the energy we'll have a good year."
