Cajuns tied for third after first round; paired with USC, Loyola Marymount in second round
DALLAS – Louisiana's Burke Alford fired a 5-under-par 67 to finish within three strokes off the individual lead and the Ragin' Cajuns finished four strokes off the team lead after the first day of the Trinity Forest Invitational on Sunday at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
The second round of the 54-hole event will begin on Monday at 8:55 a.m. Louisiana, which recorded a team score of 11-under-par 277 to finish tied for third with UNLV, will tee off beginning at 10:40 a.m. Live scoring for the event will be available at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
Louisiana concluded the first day behind USC (273) and Loyola Marymount (276) in the 15-team field with three golfers – Alford, Malan Potgieter and Eli Ortego – finishing in the top-25.
Alford, who finished tied for third overall in the field and three strokes behind first-day leader Jack Buchanan of USC, collected five birdies on the back nine and made the turn at 4-under-36. The Shreveport native added a birdie on the front nine at No. 2 and finished one stroke off his collegiate low round (5-under-66) set at the 2023 Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate.
Potgieter posted a 3-under-69 – his third round in the 60's for Louisiana in seven rounds played during the fall – to finish tied for 16th overall after the first 18 holes. Ortego posted a 2-under-70 to finish tied for 23rd for the Ragin' Cajuns with Carter Schmitt posting a 1-under-71 and Dylan Keating a 1-over-par 73.
Kyle Bennett, competing as an individual, fired his season-low round (1-under-71) to finish tied for 35th.
Host SMU (279) rounded out the top-5 in the field with San Francisco (280), Louisiana Tech (282), Rice (283), Furman (286) and UTRGV (288) finished sixth through 10th.
