Cajuns Close Three-Game Road Trip at Southern Miss

Louisiana goes for their first road win since opening night

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi - Just three contests remain in the regular season for the Louisiana soccer team as they take on Southern Miss on Thursday at 3 p.m. The Cajuns and Golden Eagles enter Thursday tied in the Sun Belt Conference standings with seven points.

Last time out the Cajuns played to a scoreless draw at Arkansas State, their second straight road draw.

"Arkansas State is a tough place to play," head coach Chris McBride said. "A lot of teams don't go there and have success. We felt as if we had a good game plan and executed it well. We created a lot of opportunities, we just couldn't capitalize on it."

Natalie Mayes kept another clean sheet, her seventh of the season, to set the program single season record. This season the Cajuns have been tough to crack defensively, allowing just 0.94 goals per game, on pace for the lowest in a season in school history.

"It starts with the forwards and the ability they have to press and set some traps to with the ball higher up the field," said McBride. "We've given up fewer shots on the back end and it goes front to back. Nat's given us a lot of communication and organization. I think our blueprint at the back and how we defend has been cohesive all year and we're really proud of that."

The Cajuns and Golden Eagles have historically played close, with each of the last six contests decided by a single goal. Louisiana has gone 4-2 in those games, including 2-1 in Hattiesburg.

"Being a local divisional rival and they play some really good soccer, it's going to be a good chess match," said McBride. "When we went there two years ago it was a one goal game and it was a one goal game last year, I don't see it being any different this year."

Louisiana returns home to face Georgia State in their home finale on Sunday. Before the game, the team will honor their seniors on Senior Day.
