The sophomore broke the school record for shutouts in a single season
JONESBORO, Arkansas - Natalie Mayes recorded a school-record seventh shutout of the season for the Louisiana soccer team but the offense couldn't breakthrough at Arkansas State in a 0-0 draw on Thursday in Jonesboro, Arkansas. It was the first draw between the two schools in the 28th all-time meeting.
Louisiana controlled the pace through much of the game. The Ragin' Cajuns fired 12 shots in the opening half and 10 in the second to lead 22-5 in shots for the contest. Eight of the Cajun shots landed on goal to only one for the Red Wolves.
"I felt we created a lot of good chances today," said head coach Chris McBride. "Arkansas State is a good defensive team and their back line played well today. When we have 22 shots we need to make sure at least one is converted. We have to be better in front of the net."
Louisiana turned up the offense in the second half, recording four shots in the first 10 minutes out of the locker room. They ended with five shots on net in the half but the Cajuns couldn't put one in the net.
On the other end, the Cajuns held the Red Wolves to just five total shots with one on net. Mayes finally recorded a save in the 78th minute, her only one of the contest.
"Defensively we played a very good game," said McBride. "We had a lot of energy and stopped them from creating any dangerous chances."
Louisiana closes a three-game road swing next Thursday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi against Southern Miss beginning at 3 p.m.
