Louisiana begins the back half of SBC play a point out of a playoff spot
CONWAY, S.C. - The Louisiana soccer team begins the second half of Sun Belt Conference play this Sunday at Coastal Carolina. The match marks the beginning of a stretch where the Ragin' Cajuns play four of their final five on the road.
"We're excited. We love being at home, but going on the road and being in a new environment, trying to get a road win is always fun," said Hailly Waterhouse.
Last time out the Cajuns played in front of a program record crowd of 2,475. Despite falling 3-0 to South Alabama, the experience has Louisiana excited for the home stretch.
"It was the most fun, electric game I've been a part of," said Waterhouse. "It's never been that loud before and it was great to hear them get into it when we had our chances."
Louisiana's first half of conference play hasn't been easy, playing four of the five contests against teams ahead of them in the standings. Despite the tough competition, the Cajuns enter the weekend a point behind the final SBC playoff spot, currently held by Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern.
"We've grown so much," said Waterhouse. "We've played a lot of teams at the top and we're right there. We feel like we've closed the gap. Sunday we felt like we played some of our best soccer of the year and that shows how much we've grown and how much more we can do."
The road to the playoffs won't be easy with so many upcoming games on the road, with only the team's home finale against Georgia State on October 27 being held in Lafayette.
"It's going to take grit," said Waterhouse. "We can pass the ball around and make runs, but we got to do it on the defensive end. We have to put it all out there and be gritty on both ends of the box."
