NORFOLK, Va. – Tatum Beck scored her first goal of the season late in the 53rd minute and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns closed out a two-match Sun Belt Conference road trip with a 1-0 victory over defending SBC Tournament champion Old Dominion on Thursday at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
Makenna Garcia stopped a career-best 12 shots as Louisiana (4-3-2, 1-1-0 SBC) handed ODU (6-1-2) its first loss in nine matches while recording the second goal allowed by the stingy Monarch defense in 810 minutes of play.
Louisiana attempted four shots in the opening half as Sisley Stephens barely missed on a pair of attempts before freshman Anneliese Switzer's blast from just outside the 18-yard box caromed off the cross bar.
The Ragin' Cajuns would break through in the second half as Mary Mueth's clear out on a ball on the edge of the 18-yard box found Alyssa Abbott downfield. The senior's crossing pass then found the right foot of Beck, who beat ODU goalkeeper Emily Bredek to the lower left corner of the goal.
Garcia stopped six shots in the opening half for Louisiana, including a pair of ODU attempts in the final five minutes. The Ragin' Cajuns goalkeeper, who posted her fourth shutout of the season, stopped six more ODU attempts in the second half to notch her second career match with 10 or more saves.
ODU, which finished with 21 shots, had a chance to score an equalizer in the final minute, but Megan Watts' point-blank attempt off a rebound sailed high.
Stephens recorded three of Louisiana's eight shots in the match with Beck attempting a pair. Switzer, Hailly Waterhouse and Brynn Dunbar each had one shot attempt for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Louisiana will return home on Sunday when it plays host to ULM in a 1 p.m. Sun Belt Conference match at the Home Bank Track and Soccer Complex. Admission to all Ragin' Cajuns home soccer matches is free.
