Mayes stops 10 shots as Louisiana earns 17th SBC appearance
LAFAYETTE – Hailly Waterhouse's goal in the 75th minute off a direct kick provided the offense the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team would need while freshman goalkeeper Natalie Mayes was stellar in goal with a career-high 10 saves in a 1-0 win over Marshall in the regular-season finale for both teams on Thursday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.
The win for Louisiana (7-8-2, 4-6-0 SBC) sealed a berth in next week's Sun Belt Conference Championships which begins on Monday (Oct. 30) at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex in Foley, Ala.
The 10-team tournament field and bracket will be announced later. Louisiana will make its 17th career appearance in the SBC Championships and first since 2021.
Both teams attempted eight shots in a scoreless opening half with Mayes, who pitched her first collegiate shutout, stopping six attempts by Marshall (7-9-1, 2-8-0 SBC).
The Ragin' Cajuns placed three attempts on frame in the opening half with Marshall goalkeeper Ashlyn Drayer stopping an attempt inside the 6-yard box by Mariella Stephens in the 15th minute, a blast by Anneliese Switzer in the 39th and a shot from outside the 18-yard box by Brynn Dunbar in the 42nd.
Louisiana would break through when Waterhouse scored her second goal of the season after freshman Mary Mueth's direct kick was sent deep into the 6-yard box. Freshman Bailey Giddings received the kick from Mueth, headed it to Waterhouse, whose right-footed attempt beat Drayer to the bottom left corner of the goal.
Mayes, making her fourth career start, faced five shots in the final 45 minutes while stopping four. The freshman stuffed attempts by the Thundering Herd duo of Ava Hall and Olivia Gandee in the first five minutes of the final period before keeping Alyssa Hardin from finding the back of the net in the 72nd minute and Cassidy Bell's potential equalizer in the 89th.
Louisiana held a 15-13 advantage in shots with Stephens, Switzer, Karleen Bedre and Briana Henry each with a pair. Switzer had a potential goal saved by Drayer in the 86th minute while Lauren Bennett's header in the 19th slipping just right of the goal.
Hardin attempted three shots to lead the Thundering Herd while Gandee and Abi Hugh each placed a pair of shots on frame. Drayer stopped four shots for Marshall.
