Louisiana moves into tie for 10th place in SBC standings with two matches remaining
LAFAYETTE – Megan Bradley scored her team-high fourth goal of the season late in the 53rd minute and Karleen Bedre became the fifth player in school history to reach the 20-goal mark in her career as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns surged past Arkansas State, 3-1, in a Sun Belt Conference match on Thursday at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.
Emma Bates' equalizer in the 30th minute helped Louisiana (6-7-2, 3-5-0 SBC) move into a 10th-place tie with Arkansas State (4-6-4, 2-3-3 SBC) in the league standings with two matches remaining in the regular season.
The Ragin' Cajuns, who improved to 14-13-0 in the all-time series against A-State, will visit Troy on Sunday (Oct. 22) in a 1 p.m. contest before ending the regular season on Oct. 26 at home against Marshall.
The Red Wolves took an early 1-0 lead just under four minutes in to the match off a direct kick from Sarah Strong. Her boot from approximately 35 yards out got over the Ragin' Cajuns defense and Tindra Cederholm sent the ball on a header past Natalie Mayes.
Bates would help Louisiana answer later in the half when her direct kick from 25-yards out found the lower left corner of the goal and past a diving Olivia Luther.
Louisiana, which posted a season-high 15 shots, would take advantage of a red card issued against Arkansas State in the 52nd minute as Bradley would find the back of the net.
Briana Henry got past an A-State defender down the right side and sent in a crossing pass into the 18-yard box where it deflected off the foot of Lauren Bennett and directed to Bradley, who beat Luther to the upper right corner of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Bedre, who moved into a tie for fourth-place in school history with her 20th career goal, sealed the match in the 67th minute with Alyssa Abbott and Mariella Stephens assisting on the goal.
Mayes, making her second career start in goal for Louisiana, stopped four of A-State's 16 shots in the contest to notch her first collegiate victory. Stephens attempted five shots for Louisiana while Bradley placed two of her three attempts on goal.
Emma Riley and Emma Riales each attempted four shots for the Red Wolves. Luther recorded five saves for A-State, which entered the match 2-0-2 in the month of October.
