Louisiana ready for home opener under Key; match with Nicholls set for Sept. 11

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team returns home after a season-opening, four-match roadtrip when it plays host to in-state opponent Southern University on Thursday at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.
 
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Admission is free. Live results will be available at CajunStats.com with live video available at RaginCajuns.com/Live.
 
Louisiana (1-2-1), which plays at home for the first time under head coach Lance Key, wrapped up its roadtrip on Sunday with a 2-0 victory at Chicago State. Skyla Sykes and Karleen Bedre each scored second-half goals for the Ragin' Cajuns while goalkeeper Mackenzie Lee stopped four shots in earning her fifth career shutout.
 
Lee, one of four seniors on the team, is second in the Sun Belt in total saves (9) and third in saves per game (4.5). Freshman Rachel Sutter is tied for fifth in the league in shots taken (10) and assists (2) while Bedre is tied for seventh in goals scored (2) and tied for 10th in points (5).
 
Southern (0-2-0) opened its second season under head coach Jeremy Fontenot with losses on the road at McNeese (4-1) and Stephen F. Austin (6-0). Cordney Armstrong scored the Jaguars' lone goal at McNeese. Chioma Eriken has stopped 20 shots in goal in 2019, including 13 against McNeese on Aug. 23.

• The opening stretch of matches in 2019 marks the first time since 2008 that Louisiana will play one home match in its first seven contests of the season.
• The 2008 squad opened the season at home against Southeastern Louisiana before playing its next seven on the road.
 
THE KEY TO WINNING
• In 12 seasons as head coach at Trinity University (Texas), Lance Key won 88.3 percent of his matches, compiling a 210-21-16  in the process.

CAJUNS TO BE SEEN ON CST/ESPN+
• Three of Louisiana's six home matches during the 2019 season will be available to nearly five millions homes with live coverage on New Orleans-based Cox Sports Television (CST).
• Matches against South Alabama (Sept. 22), Georgia Southern (Oct. 25) and Troy (Oct. 27) will be televised and will be also available on ESPN+.
• Louisiana's other home matches - Southern (Sept. 5), Appalachian State (Oct. 4) and Coastal Carolina (Oct. 6) will be streamed live on the Ragin' Cajuns Digital Network.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHERN
• Southern has opened its second season under head coach Jeremy Fontenot with losses on the road at McNeese (4-1) and Stephen F. Austin (6-0).

CAJUNS ADD HOME MATCH AGAINST NICHOLLS
• Louisiana added a seventh home match to the 2019 schedule when it will face Nicholls State on Wednesday (Sept. 11) at 7 p.m., at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.
• The contest will be the 12th all-time meeting between the schools with Louisiana holding an 8-3 lead in the series.
• The match will be the first since a 5-1 Louisiana victory on Sept. 10, 2017 in Lafayette.
