Cajuns notch first SBC win in Key era; will host Coastal Carolina on Sunday
LAFAYETTE – After battling for over 100 minutes to a scoreless tie, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team applied pressure in the start of the second overtime period and scored on an own goal for a 1-0 win over Appalachian State in a Sun Belt Conference match on Friday at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.
The win – the first Sun Belt Conference victory for Louisiana under head coach Lance Key – helped the Ragin' Cajuns improve to 5-4-3 overall and 1-1-2 in Sun Belt Conference play. App State fell to 4-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.
Louisiana, which held a 15-10 advantage in shots with four attempts coming after regulation, nearly put the match away in the final seconds of the first overtime when Alex Augustyn's shot deep in the box was knocked away by Mountaineer goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston.
The Ragin' Cajuns continued their pressure to start the final overtime session as Rachel Sutter's shot attempt 34 seconds into the period was blocked, ricocheted off a Mountaineer defender and got past Eagleston.
Sutter and Una Einarsdottir each took three shots for Louisiana while Mackenzie Lee was stellar in goal for the Ragin' Cajuns, recording four saves and posting her fourth shutout of the season and eighth of her career.
Appalachian State took eight of its 10 shots in the second half with Ava Dawson and Tess Cairney finishing with two shots each. The Mountaineers had a pair of scoring opportunities late in the second half as a shot by Amber Anderson in the 83rd minute was blocked before a follow-up attempt by Cairney sailed high over the net.
Eagleston stopped six shots for the Mountaineers, which fell to 0-6 away from home.
Louisiana will wrap up its weekend at home on Sunday when it battles Coastal Carolina (4-5-2, 2-1-1 Sun Belt) in a 1 p.m. contest.
