LAFAYETTE, La. – Coming off a 1-1 season-opening weekend on the road, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team returns to the pitch this weekend with their home opener against McNeese State on Friday at 7 p.m. before a Sunday match against Ole Miss at 1 p.m. in Oxford, Mississippi.
 
Opening Weekend
  • The Ragin' Cajuns began their 2014 season by defeating Sam Houston State 1-0 on Friday before falling to Southeastern Louisiana, 3-0, Sunday
  • Sophomore forward Yazmin Montoya netted Louisiana's goal against the Bearkats with a score in the 52nd minute from inside the box
  • Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alexias Stricklin started both contests for the Ragin' Cajuns, totaling 11 saves in 180 minutes of action
  • A total of 23 players saw action on the weekend for Louisiana

Scouting the Cowgirls
  • McNeese State opened up the season with a 1-0 win over Prairie View A&M before dropping a 2-0 contest to Houston at home last weekend
  • The Cowgirls were picked 11th out of 12 teams in the Southland Conference following a 6-12-2 record in 2013
  • However, McNeese State returns a veteran squad with 16 letterwinners and nine starters for the 2014 campaign 

Scouting the Rebels
  • Ole Miss played SEC foe Georgia to a 1-1 draw to open the season before defeating Iowa State 1-0 to wrap up the first weekend of competition
  • The Rebels are coming off the most successful season in program history with a 16-6-2 record and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament
  • Ole Miss returns 16 letterwinners from its 2013 squad and was picked to finish ninth in the SEC  

Preseason Accolades
  • Louisiana was picked to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll, voted on by the league's 10 head coaches, behind 2013 NCAA Tournament participant South Alabama
  • The Ragin' Cajuns totaled a league-high three preseason all-conference selections - Grace Howell-Harries (Senior defender), Yazmin Montoya (Sophomore forward) and Annika Schmidt (Sophomore forward)
  • Howell-Harries also garnered SBC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors after earning the award following the 2013 season

Against McNeese
  • Louisiana is 5-2-3 all-time against the Cowgirls
  • The two squads last met in 2012 in Lake Charles where the Cajuns won 2-1 in the season opener
  • McNeese State last played in Lafayette during the 2011 season, pulling out a 2-0 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns

Against Ole Miss
  • Louisiana is 0-2 against the Rebels, having fallen to them on the road in 2012, 1-0, and again in 2013 by a score of 4-0

Home Openers
  • The Cajuns are 5-4-5 all-time in home openers
  • Louisiana has opened at home against McNeese State twice, both resulting in draws back in 2007 and 2009
  • The Ragin' Cajuns are 3-0-1 in their last four home openers

Cali Connection
  • Of the 10 states represented on the 2014 Ragin' Cajuns roster, eight players hail from the Golden State, the most from any state
  • Louisiana welcomed four Californians to Lafayette this fall in junior college transfer Lindsey Stocks (Cypress), and freshmen Danielle DeRosa (Rocklin), Haley Boroch (Ontario) and Jorgie Smith (Fair Oaks)
  • The Cajuns also have redshirt freshman Alexias Stricklin (Rancho Santa Margarita), sophomores Yazmin Montoya (West Covina) and Olivia Frace (El Dorado Hills), and senior Tina Sanchez (Chino Hills) that come from California

4124 and Counting...
  • Senior defender Grace Howell-Harries has been a consistent leader for the Ragin' Cajuns for several seasons, and her numbers prove it
  • Howell-Harries played every minute for Louisiana during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, and has not left the field in 2014
  • In addition, she played four complete games to end her freshman campaign for a total of 4,124 consecutive minutes played for the Ragin' Cajuns
  • Howell-Harries has also started every game of her career, tying for 10th all-time with 60 starts to her name
