MOBILE, Ala. –
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team battled Sun Belt Conference preseason favorite South Alabama to a 4-4 draw Sunday afternoon at The Cage.

With the match winding down in regulation, sophomore forward Annika Schmidt kept the Cajuns (5-6-2, 0-3-1 SBC) alive with a goal in the 86th minute. Schmidt stole the ball from the Jaguars before sending a long shot past South Alabama goalkeeper Sarah Hay to make it 4-4 and send the match into overtime.

For the match, the Jaguars (10-2-1, 2-0-1 SBC) held a 23-16 shot advantage and a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. Schmidt paced the Cajuns offense with two goals and one assist for five points, the most by a Cajun this season. Charde Hannah led South Alabama with two goals on five shots, four being on goal.

"It was a great result on the road, and a tremendous effort for 110 minutes," said head coach Scot Wieland. "I'm very proud of this team."

South Alabama took an early 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of action with goals by Steffi Hardy and Hannah. Hardy scored first for the Jaguars with a header off a free kick by Nikki Shirtcliffe in the 15th minute before Hannah beat redshirt freshman goalie Alexias Stricklin to a loose ball to make it 2-0 South Alabama in the 19th minute.

However, a penalty kick by sophomore forward Yazmin Montoya, her second of the season, sparked the Cajuns offense in the 32nd minute. Schmidt evened the contest right before halftime, taking control of a loose ball near the top of the box and firing it past Hay for a 2-2 score in the 43rd minute. The Cajuns held South Alabama to just one shot following Montoya's goal to take the momentum into the break.

Less than a minute into the second half, sophomore midfielder Bailey Scott recorded her first goal of the season to give the Cajuns a 3-2 lead. Schmidt found Scott inside the six-yard box after a turnover by the Jaguars before Scott sent it between the posts to put Louisiana on top.

Louisiana's lead didn't last long as a foul in the box set up Rio Hardy for the penalty kick to tie up the match at 3-3 in the 55th minute.

Hannah recorded her second goal of the contest in the 70th minute with a long run down the right side before cutting back up the middle and firing to put the Jaguars back on top at 4-3.

After Schmidt's second score to send the match into overtime, junior defender Claire Ruehle put the only shot on goal during the first overtime for either team in the 94th minute, only to have it saved by Hay.

In the second extra period, the Jaguars nearly came away with the win as a shot by Tiina Trutsi just missed going in, hitting the crossbar in the 100th minute. South Alabama put a shot on goal in the second overtime, but junior goalie Lindsey Stocks picked up the save to make it a final 4-4 score.

Louisiana is back at home next weekend when the Cajuns host UALR on Friday at 7 p.m. and Arkansas State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
