Agustsson Finishes Strong To Lead Cajuns at Squire Creek

Final round of 54-hole tournament set for Tuesday
CHOUDRANT – UL's Skuli Agustsson made his second collegiate golf round one to remember.
The freshman from Akureyri, Iceland, shot four-under-par on his final 11 holes and finished with a four-under 68 Monday, moving his way into the top 15 individually after two days of the Argent Financial Classic.
Agustsson opened with a 75 in his first collegiate round Sunday, and now stands at one-under 143 heading into Tuesday's final trip around the difficult 7,105-yard, par-72 Squire Creek Country Club course. He leads the Ragin' Cajuns after two rounds and stands tied for 13th in the individual chase.
As a team, UL improved by nine shots from its first-round struggles, posting a five-over 293 in Tuesday's second round, but coach Theo Sliman said his team couldn't shake the big-hole problems that plagued the Cajuns in the opening round. UL had eight double-bogeys and one quad-bogey on Monday, and every player on the squad except Agustsson had at least one double-bogey.
"We've just had way too many," Sliman said after UL had two doubles and two triples on Sunday. "We can't accept that as a team. You can't make multiple doubles and triples if we expect to compete. That's what we need to focus on tomorrow, how can they all contribute on this course and get a par or better score because that's the expectation."
Agustsson had six birdies and two bogeys in his Monday round, bogeying his opening 10th hole but coming back with three back-side birdies. He added a deuce at the 194-yard par-three third hole and then birdied his final two holes at the par-four eighth and the par-four ninth to come within one stroke of the tournament's low round.
"Our scores were a little better," Sliman said, "and when you have a freshman shoot 68 that helps. It was really nice to see him come out and put up a great number on a difficult golf course. It shows his level of expertise in junior golf translates to college golf.
"He plays with a very calm mindset, and he plotted his way around the course, never got in any significant trouble. And if he was out of position, he managed it very nicely."
Sophomore Drew Sliman posted a two-over 74 for UL's second lowest round, and stands tied for 44th at five-over 149 going into the final round. Fourth-year senior Carter Schmitt (77-75—152) and sophomore James Holtsclaw (76-76—152) are tied for 58th and fourth-year senior Ellis Bright (76-78—154) is tied for 63rd after shooting six-over despite a quadruple-bogey on the par-four 18th hole.
North Texas shot the day's low round with a 14-under 274 and holds the team lead at 11-under 565, three shots ahead of tournament host Louisiana Tech and four up on third-place Troy entering Tuesday's final 18 holes. Lamar's Nathan Woodham had his second straight round in the 60's and leads the individual chase at 69-68—137 (-7), one stroke ahead of first-day leader Oskari Schuvalow of Louisiana Tech (68-70—138).
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. with tee times off both Nos. 1 and 10. Pairings and live scoring are available at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
