Cajuns Look For More Success at Argent Financial Classic

Louisiana looks to continue team, individual success at Squire Creek
CHOUDRANT – After up-and-down performances in their first two fall tournaments, UL's Ragin' Cajun golf team will look to find more early-season success Sunday-Tuesday when they take part in the Argent Financial Classic.
The Cajuns will also be returning to a site where they've had success in recent years when play begins Sunday at the 7,105-yard par-72 Squire Creek Country Club, ranked as the state's No. 1 layout by many golf organizations. UL shared the team title in 2023, and now-graduated All-American Malan Potgieter tied for the individual crown last year before losing in a playoff when Houston's Hudson Weibel holed out from the fairway on the first playoff hole.
"We've usually played well here," said Cajun coach Theo Sliman, whose team has finished in the top six each of the last three years since the tournament was renamed. "It's a great layout, the type of course that tests you physically and mentally, and our guys have enjoyed playing here over the last few years."
The Cajun lineup will have a different look from the first two weeks, with second-year sophomore Nathan Schuldt of Pretoria, South Africa, and true freshman Skuli Agustosson of Akureyri, Iceland, both seeing their first action of the year. Agustosson, the 12th Icelandic player to be on the Cajun squad, will be in the lineup while Schuldt, who played in four events last year, will play as an individual.
Sophomore James Holtsclaw of Shreveport was UL's individual leader last week at the Chicago Highlands Invitational in Westchester, Ill., shooting two-over 218 with two even-par rounds to finish in the top 15. He leads the Cajuns with a 71.50 stroke average.
Fourth-year seniors Ellis Bright (72.33) of Bath, England, and Carter Schmitt (72.50) of Baton Rouge rank second and third on the Cajun squad and will be joined in the lineup by sophomore Drew Sliman (73.50) of Lafayette. True freshman Kye Hanks (72.67) of Lake Charles will also play as an individual.
UL will be looking to bounce back from a rough outing at the Chicago Highlands meet, where rainy and windy conditions contributed to the Cajuns finishing ninth of 12 teams with a 26-over 890 score. One week earlier, the Cajuns had finished three shots out of winning the title at the season-opening Sandestin Collegiate Classic in Miramar Beach, Fla., where they were one-over as a team and had four players finish in the top 30.
"It was a challenge up there for every team, but we didn't handle the challenge well," Sliman said of the Chicago Highlands event. "The greens were faster than we expected, and with the wind it was tough to make even short putts. Our guys let it get to them. I saw some frustration and some very timid play, and that led to some mistakes. But these guys know they're a lot better than they showed there and they've worked hard to fix those mistakes."
None of the top five teams from last year's event are in this year's field, and UL already stands at 6-1 this year against the 13-team field that includes host Louisiana Tech, East Texas A&M, Jacksonville State, LSU New Orleans, Lamar, Nicholls, North Texas, Tarleton State, Texas State, Troy, ULM and West Florida.
Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. Sunday off the No. 10 tee, with UL paired with North Texas and ULM beginning at 10:30 a.m. Teams will play 18 holes daily through Tuesday's final round, with pairings and live scoring available at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
