Louisiana Opens In 11th Place at Argent Financial Classic

Second round of 54-hole tournament to tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Monday
CHOUDRANT – UL's golf team got off to a slow start here Sunday in the opening round of the Argent Financial Classic, and struggled the rest of the way in finishing in 11th place after the first of three rounds.
The Ragin' Cajuns, playing in their third event of the fall season, carded a 14-over-par 302 score over the testing 7,105-yard par-72 Squire Creek Country Club course, and stand 17 shots back of tournament host and leader Louisiana Tech going into Monday's second round of the three-round event.
"We had an extremely timid start for sure," said Cajun coach Theo Sliman. "Maybe a lack of preparation and I take ownership of that, but the guys didn't look prepared to get out there with an aggressive mindset like we needed to, and then we piled on too many doubles and triples."
The Cajuns had a double-bogey and two triple-bogeys from their lineup Sunday, and matched 25 bogeys with 18 birdies from that group. UL's best score of the day came from outside the lineup, with individual entrant Kye Hanks of Lake Charles carding an even-par 72 that included four birdies and four bogeys.
"We had way too many unforced bogeys and doubles," Sliman said. "We were short-siding ourselves and putting ourselves in bad position. On this course you have to think a little more, and I saw a lot of our guys in positions that made it very difficult for them. But I believe in their fight and I believe we'll show what we can do the next two days. The good thing is that it's a three-day tournament."
Freshman Skuli Agustsson of Akureyri, Iceland, made his collegiate debut and tied for the team lead with a three-over 75 despite bogeying his final two holes. Sophomore Drew Sliman also carded a 75, shooting even par except for a triple-bogey on the par-four 15th hole. That pair is tied for 41st entering Tuesday's middle round.
Fourth-year senior Ellis Bright and sophomore James Holtsclaw are one more stroke back, tied for 52nd after four-over 76 scores, and fourth-year senior Carter Schmitt is one more back at 77 to tie for 57th. Sophomore Nathan Schuldt, also making his season debut and playing as an individual, carded an opening-round 80 and is tied for 73rd.
The host Tech squad posted a three-under 285 on its home course and leads Troy (286) by one, Texas State (287) by two and Jacksonville State (288) by three entering the second round.
Individually, Tech's Oskari Schuvalow had an opening four-under 68 and is the individual leader by one over a foursome at three-under 69 – Dean Richards of Texas State, Nathan Woodham of Lamar, Brady Mann of East Texas A&M and Morton Bailey of Louisiana Tech.
The second round begins at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Pairings and live scoring are available at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
