Four players score as Cajuns improve to 6-0-1 in last seven openers; will host Ole Miss on Sunday
HAMMOND – Four players scored goals while true freshman Ally Allen stopped five shots in her collegiate debut, including a penalty kick in the second half, as Louisiana opened the 2026 season with a 4-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday at Strawberry Stadium.
Carson Glenn dished out a pair of assists while Sydney Byrne's goal in the 30th minute broke a 1-1 tie to give Louisiana (1-0-0) the lead for good. Miku Kurihara added a first-half goal for the Ragin' Cajuns while Addison Soehn and Madelyn Linenkugel added goals in the second half as Louisiana held a 12-11 advantage in shots with all four shots on-goal finding the back of the net.
Louisiana improved to 6-0-1 in its last seven season-openers dating back to 2020 and 4-0-1 overall in its last five matches against SLU (0-1-0).
Kurihara got Louisiana on the board in the 18th minute when she made a pair of moves after taking an entry pass from Glenn and deflected a shot off the hands of SLU's keeper into the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
After SLU tied the match in the 27th minute on Anna Claire Schwing's goal off a cross from Danielle Muro, the Ragin' Cajuns would score the eventual game-winner three minutes later when Byrnes took a feed from Glenn and scored on a left-footed shot from eight yards out.
Louisiana increased its lead to 3-1 in the 63rd minute when Soehn fought off a Lion defender and scored on a 7-yard blast into the upper left corner of the goal.
The Lions got a chance to close the deficit in the 71st minute after Allen was called for a foul in the box, but the freshman regrouped and stuffed Brooke Opferman's penalty kick attempt to the lower right corner before adding a save two minutes later on a shot attempt by Schwing.
The Ragin' Cajuns kept up the pressure and equaled their goal output in the 2025 season opener against Lamar when Sophia Moore fed Maiya Clark with a pass down the right side and Clark's cross found the foot of Linenkugel, who scored her first collegiate goal from seven yards out.
Louisiana will open its nine-match home schedule on Sunday when it faces SEC member Ole Miss (1-0-0) in a 1 p.m., contest at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex. Admission to all Louisiana home soccer matches is free.
