Ragin' Cajuns, Chanticleers close out regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m.
LAFAYETTE – Cameron Flukey and Darin Horn combined on a four-hit shutout as No. 20 Coastal Carolina defeated Louisiana, 6-0, Friday night before a crowd of 5,026 at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
The regular-season finale for both teams, and the rubber game of the series, is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be available on ESPN+ with fans able to listen locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
A Coastal Carolina victory would clinch at least a share of the Sun Belt regular-season title and secure the No. 1 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship, which begins Tuesday at DABOS Park in Montgomery, Alabama.
Saturday's finale will include a pre-game ceremony to recognize and honor Louisiana's senior class – Lee Amedee, Rigoberto Hernandez, Andrew Herrmann, Tyler Papenbrock and Jose Torres – along with its graduating class: Amedee, Herrmann, Murphy Brooks and field manager Dylan Auzenne.
Flukey, making his fourth appearance after missing eight weeks with an injury, worked the first four innings and allowed two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Drew Markle opened the fifth inning with a single before Horn (7-1) relieved Flukey, the preseason Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year and a projected top-10 MLB Draft pick.
Horn limited Louisiana to two hits over the final five innings, striking out nine and walking one.
Coastal Carolina (36-18, 21-8 SBC) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning against Herrmann (6-4). Blake Barthol drew a leadoff walk and moved to third before Trace Mazon delivered a two-out RBI double.
Herrmann suffered the loss despite allowing just one hit and one run over 4.2 innings in his final appearance at Russo Park. The senior left-hander escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning and exited in the fifth after issuing a walk and recording two fly-ball outs.
Louisiana (33-21, 15-14 SBC), which moved into a three-way tie for sixth place in the standings with Texas State and Old Dominion, threatened in the sixth inning when Maddox Mandino opened the frame with his second triple of the season. Blaze Rodriguez followed with a sharp ground ball back to Horn, who held Mandino at third base. Horn then struck out Noah Lewis and Amedee to end the threat.
The Chanticleers added five runs over the final three innings against reliever Sawyer Pruitt. Rex Watson delivered a two-out RBI double in the seventh inning before Blagen Pado connected on a two-out, solo home run in the eighth. Walker Mitchell and Domenico Tozzi added RBI hits in the ninth inning.
