Louisiana to open Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Tuesday against Marshall
LAFAYETTE – Ty Roman and three Louisiana relievers combined on a six-hitter as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns defeated No. 20 Coastal Carolina, 3-2, on Saturday at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park to claim the Sun Belt Conference home series finale.
Â
The victory, coupled with results from around the league, moved Louisiana into the No. 7 seed for the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which begins Tuesday at DABOS Park in Montgomery, Alabama.
Â
Louisiana (34-21, 16-14 SBC) will face No. 10-seeded Marshall (23-31) in a single-elimination game on Tuesday at 3 p.m. A win by Louisiana would set up a rematch with Coastal Carolina (36-19, 21-9 SBC) on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., with third-seeded App State and sixth-seeded Texas State filling out the remaining half of the bracket.
Â
Roman (4-4) worked the first five innings, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Parker Smith tossed a scoreless sixth inning before freshman Hayden Pearson surrendered one run in the seventh. Tyler Papenbrock earned his third save of the season, retiring six of the final seven batters and ending the game with a called third strike to Blagen Pado in front of a crowd of 4,936.
Â
Louisiana (34-21, 16-14 SBC) opened the scoring in the fourth inning against Coastal starter Russ Norman (6-5). Steven Spalitta singled with one out before Drew Markle doubled to put runners at second and third. Donovan LaSalle followed with a deep fly ball to left-center that was caught at the wall by Pado, allowing Spalitta to score on the sacrifice fly.
Â
The Chanticleers tied the game in the fifth when Ty Barrango drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a single by Dean Mihos.
Â
The Cajuns answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead for good.
Â
Owen Galt and Blaze Rodriguez opened with singles before Noah Lewis added a bunt single to load the bases. An RBI single by Lee Amedee gave Louisiana a 2-1 advantage with a bloop single that fell between three defenders in center field, and Spalitta later drove in Rodriguez on a fielder's choice for a 3-1 lead.
Â
Louisiana, which did not commit an error during the three-game series, turned in several standout defensive plays.
Â
LaSalle made a pair of difficult catches in right field, including one reaching into the Coastal bullpen seating area. He also made a catch at the wall in right-center on a drive by Trace Mazon before flipping the ball to Lewis, who fired back into the infield to keep the runner at first.
Â
Freshman Noah Lewis, who had two of Louisiana's 10 hits in the game, added several defensive highlights of his own, recording five putouts, including three sliding catches in center field.
Â
Coastal Carolina pulled within 3-2 in the seventh when Barrango singled with two outs and scored on a triple by Mihos. Papenbrock, however, retired the side in order in the eighth and closed out the ninth after Colt Brown threw out Jordan Taylor attempting to steal second base and getting Blagen Pado looking at a called third strike.
Â
Prior to the game, Louisiana honored seniors Amedee, Papenbrock, Andrew Herrmann, Rigoberto Hernandez and Jose Torres. The university also recognized Amedee, Murphy Brooks and field/clubhouse manager Dylan Auzenne for earning undergraduate degrees, while Herrmann received his master's degree.
