Brasch limits Chants to one hit through 6.0 innings for fourth straight quality start
LAFAYETTE – Cody Brasch and two relievers combined to limit No. 20 Coastal Carolina to three hits as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns earned a 7-2 Sun Belt Conference victory before 4,612 fans Thursday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Blaze Rodriguez and Noah Lewis combined for five hits and five runs scored as Louisiana (33-20, 15-13 SBC) scored in five different innings. Coastal Carolina (35-18, 20-8 SBC) managed just six baserunners, with Blake Barthol's two-run homer in the seventh inning accounting for the only runs allowed by the Cajuns' pitching staff.
Donovan LaSalle collected two hits and drove in three runs, while Owen Galt added two singles to pace Louisiana's 11-hit attack. Lee Amedee reached base three times and drove in two runs as the Cajuns officially clinched a berth in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Brasch (5-2) dominated from the outset, allowing one hit over six innings in an 88-pitch performance for his fourth straight quality start. The right-hander lowered his Sun Belt-leading ERA to 2.24 after striking out seven without issuing a walk. He hit one batter and retired the final 11 batters he faced. Brasch also improved his season WHIP to 0.91, which ranks ninth nationally.
Parker Smith worked one inning in relief, allowing a hit batter and Barthol's two-run homer, before freshman Hayden Pearson pitched the final 2.0 innings and surrendered one hit.
Louisiana grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Rodriguez opened the game with a single against Chanticleer starter Luke Jones (4-2), stole second and scored two batters later on Amedee's groundout.
The Cajuns extended the lead in the third after Rodriguez again led off with a single. Following a flyout by Lewis and a walk to Amedee, Colt Brown delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0. Two batters later, LaSalle blooped a double down the right-field line to score two more runs and push the advantage to 4-0.
Louisiana added another run in the fifth when Lewis singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Amedee. Jones was charged with five runs on nine hits over six innings.
After Barthol's two-run homer in the seventh cut the lead to 5-2, the Cajuns answered immediately with a bases-loaded walk by LaSalle. Louisiana added its final run in the eighth when Lewis singled home Rodriguez.
The victory moved Louisiana into a tie for fifth place in the Sun Belt standings with South Alabama, which fell to Arkansas State on Thursday. The top six teams in the league standings receive first-round byes in the conference tournament, while teams seeded seventh through 10th open play Tuesday in a single-elimination round.
Louisiana and Coastal Carolina will continue the three-game series Friday at 6 p.m. The regular-season finale Saturday will include senior and graduation ceremonies. All games in the series are available on ESPN+ with fans able to listen locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
